An investigation revealed that 2 years earlier he had repeatedlyraped the 11-year-old daughter of his live in girlfriend. Both of these offenses resulted in a 41-year prison sentence for Murphy. The family of the 13-year-old victim is suing the Town of Navassa, its Police Department and Chief of Police for inadequate background screening and not following the certification process required by the state of North Carolina.
